Representative Don Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general from Nebraska, has openly criticized President Donald Trump for comments regarding Ukraine. Bacon, a Republican known for his strong support of Ukraine, accused the White House of creating a sense of moral ambiguity surrounding the conflict. He argued that Russia is solely responsible for starting the war.
Bacon stated, “Moral ambiguity continues to grip the WH. It’s Putin who started this war and is doing the invading. Blame Putin. This is embarrassing.” Trump had said he wanted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “end the war.” Trump claimed, “I get along with both. I get along with President Putin. I get along with President Zelensky. And like I told him, I want him to end the war, get the war ended.”
A White House official responded to Newsweek, highlighting Trump’s desire to end the conflict due to its human cost. The official said, “The President has a humanitarian heart and wants this war settled so the senseless killing ends.” They emphasized the White House’s engagement with Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate a settlement, adding, “We are the only country in the world that can play that role.”
Bacon’s Warnings on Russia and NATO
Bacon has consistently challenged Trump’s rhetoric on Russia, Ukraine, and NATO. He warned that Trump’s approach appeared to appease Russian President Vladimir Putin, arguing that a peace settlement must not reward aggression. Bacon stated Americans should not pressure Ukraine into territorial concessions. Earlier, Bacon rebutted Trump’s criticism of Zelensky by asserting that efforts to portray Kyiv as responsible were morally and factually wrong.
Beyond Ukraine, Bacon supports NATO and traditional U.S. alliances. He criticized Trump’s remarks about Greenland as “foolish,” cautioning that threats to Denmark and Greenland could damage U.S.-European trust. Bacon has also shown concern over upheaval in national security during Trump’s second term, emphasizing the importance of strong alliances and experienced military leadership.
Current State of the Ukraine Conflict
The Ukraine conflict is now in its fifth year, with Russia and Ukraine engaged in extensive drone and missile attacks. Diplomatic efforts remain stalled. Zelensky recently visited Washington for talks with Trump and U.S. officials, discussing military cooperation, sanctions, and peace negotiations. Discussions have included missile production, air defense, and peace talks revival.
Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes against Russian targets. Recently, it claimed responsibility for attacks on vessels linked to Russian and Iranian logistics in the Caspian Sea. Witnessing war impacts firsthand, she realized her previous opinions were influenced by propaganda. Loomer’s change is seen as evidence that support for Ukraine may be expanding among Trump-aligned voices, reflecting a broader trend of increased sympathy for Kyiv.
Bacon emphasizes the need for clarity in discussing the war. Russia started the conflict by invading Ukraine. Trump’s call for Zelensky to “end the war” might have intended peace, but for Bacon, the wording obscured responsibility.
