A late-night encounter with a black bear turned tragic for a Northern California couple after the animal attacked them and fatally injured their French bulldog. The dog reportedly tried to protect them during the attack, which left them hospitalized.
In the early morning hours of September 19, Jeff and Mallory Wilson heard their dog, Cassie, bark once. Jeff Wilson went outside to check the backyard of their Trinity County home. As he opened the door, a cinnamon-colored black bear emerged from behind their patio furniture, lunging at him and knocking him to the floor.
Awakened by the noise, Mallory Wilson also went outside and was attacked by the bear, as noted by a GoFundMe page organized by a friend of the couple. Jeff and Mallory sustained serious injuries during the September 19 bear attack. Their beloved French bulldog, Cassie, later died from injuries sustained during the encounter.
I think the bear was startled by us just as much as we were startled by it,Wilson told the news site Redheaded Blackbelt. During the attack, Cassie placed herself between Wilson and the bear, attempting to protect them.
The bear grabbed the dog and started to run away. The owners managed to make the bear release Cassie and scared it away. Though badly wounded, the couple rushed Cassie to emergency care. Despite undergoing surgery for several injuries, Cassie tragically died two days after the attack.
Jeff suffered two broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds, while Mallory sustained serious injuries to her head and face, along with other wounds. Both face ongoing medical treatment and recovery, as mentioned in the fundraising page.
The Wilsons own Radio Ranch, a ‘glamping’ retreat in Trinity County. They have years of experience living alongside wildlife. Despite being cautious, the bear attack was unprovoked and unexpected. The couple said in a statement that they treasure the natural world and respect the wildlife around them.
The attack has led to the cancellation of Radio Ranch reservations. An investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is ongoing. The fundraiser aims to cover the couple’s medical bills, veterinary costs, property damage, and hiring help during recovery. It has raised over $16,000 of its $20,000 goal.
California wildlife officials advise residents to secure food and garbage that can attract bears and to keep pets indoors at night. The CDFW states that black bear attacks resulting in injuries to humans are rare.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of bear encounters this year, including break-ins around California’s Lake Tahoe region and other bear attacks on hikers and hunters.
