The Republican Party is witnessing a new trend as Vice President JD Vance and certain House Republicans advocate for union-friendly legislation. This marks a potential shift in GOP dynamics. Discussions center around the Railway Safety Act and mandatory arbitration for labor contracts. Critics argue these measures aim to create union jobs without enhancing safety, focusing instead on attracting blue-collar workers and securing the Teamsters endorsement for the 2028 election. Concerns arise about the economic consequences and the potential rollback of deregulation efforts.
Railroad Union Under Scrutiny
A major railroad union, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED-IBT), faces criticism following a watchdog report. Allegations suggest the union’s leadership diverted funds to support Democratic causes that opposed former President Trump’s administration, allegedly undermining many members who align with the MAGA movement. This information comes from the American Accountability Foundation (AAF) report.
The report states, “The leadership’s progressive alignment is a stunning betrayal of the large proportion of its working-class members who support the MAGA agenda and President Trump’s leadership.”
The report accuses the union’s leaders of attacks on Trump’s policies during his first term. They allegedly described his deregulation efforts as “dangerous” and accused him of “undoing Obama’s legacy.” The union reportedly supported left-wing initiatives like Black Lives Matter, abortion rights, and universal health care. It also maintains close ties with Democratic lawmakers, such as Reps. Jesús “Chuy” García and Dina Titus.
The report highlights a “growing disconnect” between union leadership and many “rank-and-file” members who support Trump and Vance’s political agendas. Despite recent polling showing that unions like BMWED-IBT have significant support for Trump, union leadership continues to demonstrate Democratic ties.
Examining Union Spending
The report analyzed BMWED-IBT’s spending practices from 2017 to 2024. Allegations include sending over $441,098 to “left-wing” groups, including more than $100,000 to the National Democratic Club. Additionally, their PAC reportedly donated heavily to Democratic Party committees compared to Republican ones.
The AAF report also criticizes “massive wasteful spending” within the BMWED-IBT. Allegedly, two-thirds of headquarters employees had six-figure salaries in 2024, vastly higher than the average member’s income. It claims the union spent $2.33 million at casinos and resorts, including a significant payment to Caesars Entertainment.
AAF President Tom Jones expressed disappointment, stating, “The BMWE Union is completely out of touch with its members and is actively betraying the very Trump-supporting workers it claims to support.”
Union’s Response
The BMWED-IBT strongly refutes these allegations. Union President Tony D. Cardwell states that since taking leadership in 2022, the union achieved a budget surplus. He emphasizes their focus on securing policies and protections for members, asserting that political donations come from a voluntarily funded PAC.
No dues dollars are allocated to political lobbying,” Cardwell declared. “Party affiliation is not a determining factor. Support of working railroaders is the only thing that matters.”
Despite Democratic connections, BMWED-IBT has also collaborated with Republicans on key safety legislation. Sen. Josh Hawley introduced the Secure Tracks Act, supported by the union, which mandates dual inspections of railroad tracks.
BMWED-IBT’s social media activity indicates support for Trump and Vance’s initiatives, reflecting cooperation despite political differences. Earlier, a similar AAF report addressed the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, highlighting alignment with Democratic candidates despite a supportive membership base for Trump.
