Comedian Bill Burr shared insights during an interview, suggesting that the murder case involving Luigi Mangione and the killing of a healthcare CEO should drive healthcare companies to reassess their policies.
Burr, in conversation with Rolling Stone, remarked, “If you look at this situation, like the reaction to the Luigi [Mangione] incident, their response wasn’t, ‘Maybe we need to examine what we’re doing if it pushes someone to this extreme.’ [Healthcare executives’] move was to remove their faces from the internet and hire security.”
He further questioned, “Don’t you think you need to review this? You’re not the president. You’re just the CEO of a business. Why do you require this level of security?”
The case involves UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was tragically murdered in December 2024. Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court on August 14 to killing Thompson.
Attorney Rafael Mangual, representing the Manhattan Institute, discussed Burr’s remarks, emphasizing that the comedian’s comments could be seen as endorsing violence as an expression of dissatisfaction with corporate actions. Mangual stated, “Brian Thompson was a victim of a cold-blooded murder. Luigi Mangione isn’t to be seen as a hero or martyr; he unjustifiably shot a man over business objections.”
Expressing anything short of condemnation is to open complex legal and moral dilemmas, according to Mangual. He added, “If homicide is considered a way to express grievances, where do we set boundaries? Who decides whose lives are considered at risk? What consequences are permissible for personal offenses taken from comedic acts?”
In legislative, judicial, and jury hands should decisions lie, Mangual concluded, advising Burr likewise.
Separately, Burr reflected on his personal growth as a comedian and distanced himself from politically incorrect humor directed at women. He expressed, “Being a comedian, I realized some of my previous views needed to change, especially concerning women. Reflecting back, my past comments had more to do with my personal struggles than true feelings.”
Burr acknowledged evolving perspectives on relationships, saying he missed out on positive experiences by clinging to outdated attitudes.
