Blackpool Burger Stand Offers Iconic $1 Burger for Nearly Two Decades

A popular burger stand in Blackpool, England has maintained its signature burger price at little more than $1 for almost 20 years. Owned by Chris Higgitt, Higgitt’s Las Vegas Arcade Blackpool & £1 Burger Bar sells its well-known burger for £1, or about $1.34, since its inception in 2006.

The burger includes a bun, an English beef patty, onions, and sauce. Higgitt’s affordable pricing continues to attract long queues of customers, particularly during peak tourist seasons.

I am very proud of being able to keep the price for this long, Higgitt, 58, stated. He noted that customers willingly wait over an hour to indulge in the budget-friendly meal.

Previously, Higgitt worked as a processing and quality engineer before running a bed-and-breakfast with his wife, Karen. In 2006, they bought an arcade that wasn’t performing well and contemplated new opportunities.

An impromptu conversation led them to consider opening a burger bar. Higgitt did the calculations and realized they could feasibly sell burgers for £1. This side venture gradually became their primary income source. Today, about 90% of their revenue stems from their burger operations, open from March to November.

Higgitt attributes his cost maintenance to efficiency, bulk buying, and social media influence. Each burger costs him approximately 50 pence, or around 68 cents, to produce, factoring in ingredients and electricity. Efficient bulk purchasing and a steady customer base are vital.

Social media significantly drives customer traffic. Videos made by TikTok creators and YouTubers continue to attract new patrons, making Higgitt’s establishment a must-visit for those seeking Britain’s most affordable burger. Higgitt is keen to welcome food YouTubers and TikTokers to film their experiences, which boosts interest and draws crowds.

Beyond burgers, the stand also offers hot dogs, Spam sandwiches, and sausage sandwiches. The stand has become a focal point for visitors wanting to experience both the food and the vibrant atmosphere.
