Bret Baier, a Fox News host, clarified remarks made during a hot-mic moment that gained attention on social media. During midterm election coverage, Baier asked if they could ‘do a spin,’ referring to a feature of the broadcast.
The remark took place while discussing a contested Senate race in Michigan on a night when Democrats made significant strides. They secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Baier, 56, was heard on-air saying, ‘Can we do a spin on the races that—? Oh, I’m sorry. I guess we’re on TV.’
Following the incident, Baier elaborated on X, explaining he was addressing co-anchor Bill Hemmer. Hemmer was overseeing the election results during the broadcast. Baier stated, ‘That was to Bill Hemmer. A spin on the board with Bill to see the various races that were outstanding. Thanks.’
A social media user inquired about the meaning of ‘a spin on the board.’ Baier clarified it referred to Hemmer’s ability to view different states’ incoming votes. He responded, ‘It means a spin on the board that Bill Hemmer controls looking at different states that had votes coming in. ‘A spin on the board.’ Means show Michigan – Maine – Iowa. The states that are remaining at that time.’
During another segment, Baier requested Hemmer to ‘do a spin’ on the board. Fox News, when asked for a comment, directed PEOPLE to Baier’s online responses.
In the discussed Michigan race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers for the open Senate seat, as reported by the Associated Press. Democrats have gained seven Senate seats, reaching a total of 54 seats, granting them a majority. Uncalled races in Alaska and Mississippi could boost this to 56 seats, following their initial 47-seat count entering the election.
