WNBA star Brittney Griner has initiated divorce proceedings after eight years of marriage. The 35-year-old Olympic gold medalist filed the documents in Fulton County, Georgia, stating the marriage to Cherelle Griner is “irretrievably broken.”
In the filings, Brittney Griner notes the couple has been separated since July 24. Her lawyer conveyed a desire for a private resolution, with no additional comments provided at this time. Cherelle Griner’s representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.
The Griners were married in June 2018 after meeting at Baylor University, where Brittney Griner achieved the rank of No. 2 on the NCAA Division I women’s all-time scoring list. Cherelle Griner, aged 33 and an attorney, fervently advocated for her wife’s release following Brittney’s detention in Russia in February 2022 due to cannabis oil possession.
Brittney Griner faced a nine-year sentence after her conviction on drug charges in Russia but returned home in December 2022 due to a prisoner swap deal facilitated by President Joe Biden’s administration. During their marriage, the couple welcomed their first son in 2024, and Brittney is now pursuing joint custody as part of the divorce case.
This marriage marks Brittney Griner’s second. She was previously married to Glory Johnson in 2015. Their union ended within a month, during which Johnson became pregnant with twins via in vitro fertilization. Griner was ordered to pay child support for the twins in 2016.
