Buffalo Grove Fire Station 25 Opens with Health and Safety Enhancements

Buffalo Grove’s new Fire Station 25, located at 505 W. Dundee Road, recently celebrated its grand opening on September 16. This state-of-the-art facility emphasizes the health and safety of firefighters, reflecting a significant commitment from the village. The upgraded station promises benefits for both the staff and residents.

During the opening, Buffalo Grove Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Collins showcased the station’s advanced equipment. The event gathered village leaders, staff, and community members to tour the modern facility.

Designed by FGM Architects, with construction managed by Frederick Quinn Corp., the project was completed slightly under its $10.1 million budget. It replaces a 50-year-old station that had become inefficient. According to Project Manager Adam Slotkus, the former station required numerous repairs, and its age had become a burden.

Village President Eric Smith highlighted that the new station goes beyond being just a building. It underscores a shared commitment to public safety and the well-being of those who respond to emergencies. Fire Chief Larry Kane and Deputy Chief Collins emphasized the station’s new features, such as high-speed overhead doors. These doors enhance response time and reduce energy costs during colder months by retaining heat.

The facility is environmentally friendly, featuring LED lights at the doors and occupancy sensors to conserve electricity. A vital addition includes a hose system that expels vehicle exhaust outside, tackling cancer-related concerns among firefighters.

Inside, the station provides individual bunk rooms equipped with climate controls and programmable alerts to minimize sleep disruptions. Collins noted that minimizing interruptions helps protect firefighters’ cardiovascular health and reduces cancer risks linked to sleep loss.

The station offers expanded bay capacity and introduces a new rescue squad vehicle. This vehicle is smaller, quicker, and tailored for paramedic and technical rescue operations.

The workout facility has tripled in size compared to the previous station. Collins emphasized the importance of physical fitness, encouraging firefighters to maintain their health as it is easier to stay in shape than to regain it.
