Bulgaria Halts Weapon Supplies to Ukraine

Bulgaria will no longer send weapons to Ukraine, according to Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov. He stated this decision clearly in Sofia, expressing that the conflict in Ukraine cannot be solved by military means. Stoyanov described the situation as a ‘war of attrition’ and emphasized the importance of saving human lives.

Stoyanov mentioned that Ukraine requires more manpower rather than additional weaponry, as it already possesses sufficient arms. Prime Minister Rumen Radev, in power since April, has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions instead of military intervention.

Although Bulgaria is a NATO and European Union member, the country had been providing military aid to Ukraine since the initiation of the Russian invasion in 2022. This aid mostly consisted of Soviet-era weapons and was significant during the early phase of the war. However, domestic political challenges meant these shipments were primarily routed through third countries.

Stoyanov urged for negotiations to achieve a fair peace agreement that satisfies both parties involved in the conflict. He acknowledged the critical role of the European Union in this process but pointed out that the EU’s previous support for Ukraine complicates its position as a neutral mediator.

Additionally, Stoyanov disclosed plans for Bulgaria to enhance its defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2030.
