California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed support for Governor Gavin Newsom’s claims that the Trump administration has weaponized the Justice Department. These claims arose after reports indicated the federal investigation involving Newsom and his wife originated in California. It was not initiated by the Trump Administration in Washington, D.C.
Bonta stated, “I have concluded that this is highly dubious—there’s no trust in it.” He accused former President Donald Trump of using the DOJ repeatedly for political purposes.
Governor Newsom announced publicly on Monday that he and his wife, Jen Siebel Newsom, are under investigation by the DOJ. He accused Trump of directing the DOJ’s actions and suggested they were added to “Donald Trump’s hit list.”
According to Newsom, the scrutiny might be influenced by his potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election. He is seen as a significant political figure, governing California, the most populous state and one of the largest economies globally.
Bonta told Fox News Digital, “Trump has ‘weaponized’ the DOJ, shifting it from criminal prosecutions to conducting political persecutions against political enemies.” He referenced former Attorney General Pam Bondi’s actions as an example of targeting Trump’s opponents.
Among those mentioned was Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who did not comment on whether the probe began with federal prosecutors in California. The investigation reportedly started in 2025, based on whistleblower complaints related to the Newsoms’ finances. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento handles it, and the Associated Press noted that federal authorities in Washington were not involved in commencing the investigation.
An earlier investigation during the Biden administration led to corruption charges against Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson. She admitted guilt for falsehoods regarding sharing internal information. While Newsom was not directly involved, his office believes federal investigators expanded their focus under Trump’s administration.
The Governor’s office filed a public records request with the DOJ requesting documents mentioning Newsom or his wife during Trump’s second term, seeking more information amid concerns over political motivations.
