California McDonald’s Employee Suffers Severe Burns in Workplace Incident

A McDonald’s employee in California, Jacob Smith, 20, is in the hospital with severe burns following an alleged attack by a colleague. This incident occurred on May 30 at a McDonald’s in Yuba City.

The Incident

According to Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, Jacob was preparing to count the day’s earnings when the attack occurred. She shared with NBC affiliate KCRA that Jacob saw something from the corner of his eye before hot oil was thrown on him.

Suspect Arrested

The police in Yuba City have identified the suspect as Jalani Bluett. After the incident, Bluett, 23, fled the scene but was later arrested on May 31 by Sutter County deputies. He was charged with several felonies, including battery with serious bodily injury, mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon. Bluett has pleaded not guilty to these charges.

Ongoing Investigation and Support

Details of what prompted the attack are still unclear, and Bluett’s public defender has not commented on the situation. Meanwhile, John Cook, the owner of the Yuba City McDonald’s, confirmed that Bluett no longer works for them. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Jacob and prioritizing the safety and well-being of all employees, guests, and the community.

Smith’s Condition

Jacob’s injuries are extensive. He has burns on one side of his face, down his neck, his right arm, and across his back. His mother described his pain as “excruciating.” Medical professionals are working to reduce the burn areas to minimize the need for skin grafts.
