Two days after Californians cast their primary election votes, key races in the state remain unresolved. Voters are eager to learn which candidates will appear on the November ballot for governor of the nation’s most populous state and the mayor of Los Angeles.
California uses a primary system where the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election. As ballots continue to be counted, it’s unclear if the final choices will be between two Democrats or a Democrat and a Republican.
Governor’s Race
In the race for governor, former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, currently leads for one of the two runoff spots. He has about 27% of the counted votes. However, millions of ballots are yet to be counted, leaving room for shifts.
Xavier Becerra, a Democrat and former member of President Biden’s cabinet, trails closely behind with roughly 26% of the votes tallied so far. This close competition suggests that Becerra might surpass Hilton as counts continue.
Additionally, Tom Steyer, a Democratic billionaire advocating progressive policies, could catch up as more votes are counted.
