An Arizona school board member, Kimberly Fisher, faces calls for resignation after reportedly making a Nazi salute during a heated public meeting. This took place before she compared the board president to a dictator and mentioned, “All I could think of tonight was Hitler.”
The incident occurred at a Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board meeting on May 26. Fisher appeared to raise her right arm, saying, “Heil, heil,” while disputing with board President Paul Carver Jr. The disagreement was about scheduling a community study session for discussions on district boundaries.
Fisher objected to holding the session in the afternoon, arguing community members would find it tough to attend. “The whole point of having a study session with our community is that we can get their input and they can hear our discussions,” Fisher said.
Carver noted he moved to adjourn the meeting due to concerns about Arizona’s Open Meeting Law, as the discussion involved an agenda item not posted. “The adjournment was simply because the board was going into an area potentially violating Arizona’s Open Meeting Law,” Carver explained in a Facebook video.
Carver said Fisher made the gesture and comment after the adjournment motion. He emphasized, “It is never okay to make those gestures.” The incident drew condemnation from district officials, clarifying Fisher acted independently and didn’t reflect the district’s views. Their statement said, “The District does not condone gestures or language tied to hate or discrimination.”
The Deer Valley Educators Association also condemned Fisher’s conduct. “DVEA was horrified by Kimberly Fisher’s Nazi salute. Any leader who uses such gestures is unfit for public service,” President Kelley Fisher stated, calling for her resignation.
Hours later, Fisher took to Facebook, criticizing Carver’s leadership as dictatorial. “We have been operating under virtually a dictatorship,” she said, urging voters against supporting Carver in future elections.
Fisher didn’t address the gesture in her livestream. Near its end, she compared her thoughts to historical dictators, mentioning Pol Pot and Hitler.
In another social media video, Carver responded to community queries about the lack of action against Fisher. He explained Arizona law limits board discipline over elected members, describing Fisher’s behavior as repetitive and unacceptable.
Deer Valley Unified School District serves more than 33,000 students across northern Maricopa County, including areas like Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Cave Creek, and New River.
