A video of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has spread widely online, featuring his remark “Make America Great Again” during a speech in New York. This sparked the term “Maple MAGA” and drew mockery from social media users. However, Carney’s mention of the phrase was not an endorsement of Donald Trump or the MAGA movement. He aimed to highlight that a robust Canadian economy benefits the United States.
Understanding the ‘Maple MAGA’ Trend
The clip came to prominence after Carney addressed an audience at the Economic Club of New York, expressing: “This is good for all Canadians, but it is also good for the United States, because it makes us a better ally. Canada Strong will help make America great again.” Here, “Canada Strong” signifies Carney’s commitment to strengthening Canada while standing against Trump. The phrase quickly gained traction online, often used to describe Canadians or movements aligning with Trump.
Carney’s Political Context
Carney rose to power amid anti-U.S. sentiment, as Trump frequently referred to Canada as the 51st state and engaged in trade disputes. To counter, Ottawa strengthened ties with European NATO members facing similar U.S. criticism. In January, Carney expressed concern over global powers using economic integration as coercion.
However, on Thursday, Carney adopted a more conciliatory approach towards the United States in anticipation of the USMCA free trade agreement review. This deal is crucial for Canada’s economy, especially as the country faces recession pressures, marked by two consecutive quarters of economic decline.
Emphasizing Cooperation and Shared Interests
Carney clarified his intent, urging the U.S. and Canada to unite and compete globally. He noted, “While Canada and the United States have had our differences, shared values and common interests persist.”
Marking their intertwined economies, about 99 percent of American natural gas imports and 85 percent of its electricity come from Canada. The U.S. also receives over half of its crude oil from its northern neighbor. “Canada is America’s largest customer, buying more goods than China, Japan, and Germany combined,” he stated, emphasizing their mutual strength.
