Brazilian lawmakers in the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly experienced a unique interruption on July 30. A group of capybaras wandered into the government building in Cuiabá, momentarily diverting attention from an impending vote.
Video footage by legislative staffer Nayara Bueno captured the scene. It showed the animals moving calmly through the building’s entrance as employees attempted to guide them outside.
“They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno told The Associated Press.
Fortunately, the capybaras did not cause any damage during their brief appearance in the legislature. Their demeanor remained relaxed, strolling through the front door with ease.
The building’s proximity to a park, which hosts a variety of wildlife, provides easy access for these creatures. Capybaras, native to South America, thrive in wetlands and are often found near water. They are social animals, typically moving in groups, and can weigh up to 175 pounds.
The capybara’s visit adds to their growing internet fame. Many enjoy sharing videos and images of these large rodents displaying their peaceful behavior around people and other animals.
