A passenger on the Carnival Panorama cruise ship jumped overboard as the vessel was concluding the final full day of a week-long journey. This cruise embarked from Long Beach, California, on September 13 and was returning from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when the male passenger went overboard.
A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line confirmed, “A male guest aboard Carnival Panorama jumped overboard while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, California.”
Upon being informed about the missing guest, the ship’s crew initiated search and investigation protocols. This included checking CCTV footage and notifying both U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards. The spokesperson stated that support is being provided to the passenger’s family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” the statement added.
Announcements regarding the missing guest reportedly began around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The ship had left its last port of call, Puerto Vallarta, at 8 p.m. on Thursday. These announcements continued throughout the day, and by approximately 3 p.m., the ship turned around to aid in the search.
Around 3:30 p.m., a shipwide search was announced. Passengers were instructed to return to their staterooms as security scanned identification cards, which is standard in such situations.
“Carnival Panorama had departed from its last port of call on the sail, Puerto Vallarta, at 8 p.m. on Thursday,” stated a passenger.
Approximately an hour later, guests were told the search was ongoing and were asked to remain in their rooms. By 5 p.m., the captain confirmed the passenger had gone overboard after reviewing surveillance footage. The local authorities took over the rescue operation, and guests were allowed to leave their staterooms.
The family of the missing passenger received notifications about his disappearance and were offered support from the care team onboard. At about 7 p.m., passengers were informed that the ship was scheduled to arrive in Long Beach by 9 a.m. the following day.
