Celine Dion has made a triumphant return to the stage after a six-year hiatus, while battling stiff-person syndrome. This emotional occasion unfolded at Plenitude Arena in Paris, France, on September 12, where the 58-year-old singer commenced her 26-show residency. The concert opened with her French-language song On Ne Change Pas, where Dion expressed her joy and gratitude to the audience.
During the performance, Dion shared the significance of being back on stage, stating, “I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!” She thanked her fans for their support during her absence. Dion acknowledged, “I am everything I am because you loved me,” before performing her hit Because You Loved Me.
Celine Dion’s career faced interruptions beginning in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed her Courage World Tour. In January 2022, she canceled the tour’s North American leg due to severe muscle spasms interfering with her recovery. At the time, Dion was following her doctors’ recommendations, aspiring to return once her health improved.
Later in 2022, Dion disclosed her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in an emotional video. She described SPS as affecting approximately one in a million people and stated it caused muscle stiffness, impacting her ability to walk and sing.
SPS, defined by the Cleveland Clinic, is a rare autoimmune movement disorder affecting the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms start with muscle stiffness in the trunk, advancing to stiffness and rigidity in the legs and other muscles.
In 2024, Dion offered an update on her progress, receiving applause when she appeared at the Grammy Awards to present the album of the year. Her health journey was also featured in the Prime Video documentary I Am: Celine Dion.
July 2024 marked another milestone when Dion performed Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne à l’amour at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. This was her first live performance since revealing her SPS diagnosis and signaled optimism for her return to concerts.
