Edwards Faces Tough Reelection Challenge
Republican Representative Chuck Edwards is in a challenging reelection race in North Carolina’s 11th District. This region, centered around Asheville and the western rural areas, showed support for former President Trump by nearly 10 points in the 2024 presidential election. Democrats see this district as a chance for a pickup due to what they anticipate will be a favorable national climate in the 2026 midterms, given Trump’s decreasing approval ratings.
Ethics Committee’s Recommendation
The recommendation by the House Ethics Committee to censure Edwards adds another layer of uncertainty to the November contest. Edwards secured his party’s nomination during the March primaries, but was forecasted to be in a competitive race even before the ethics committee brought its recommendation.
Could Edwards Lose Reelection?
Edwards is set to compete against Democrat Jamie Ager in the upcoming election. Ager, the grandson of former Representative James Clarke, who represented the district over 30 years ago, is looking to reclaim this seat for the Democrats.
Prediction markets suggest a competitive race, with Kalshi showing Ager having a 58% chance to win, an increase from 52% a week before. On Polymarket, Ager’s chances stood at 59%, consistent with previous estimates. These platforms aggregate real-money trades to estimate probabilities but do not always predict outcomes accurately.
An internal survey by Impact Research, shared with Newsweek, showed Ager leading by one point over Edwards, at 45% to 44%, with 10% undecided. This poll involved 500 likely voters between December 15-17, 2025, with a margin of error of ±4.4 percentage points.
While rural areas lean conservative, Asheville’s influence limits Republican victories. Parts of this district leaned towards Democrats during the 2024 election, contrary to national trends.
Race Classified as a Toss-Up
Sabato’s Crystal Ball reclassified the race as a toss-up, highlighting Jamie Ager’s effective fundraising and historical ties to the district. Republican favorability doesn’t assure Edwards’ victory due to recent challenges.
Cook Political Report still notes the race leans Republican. Nevertheless, Democrats are deploying resources; House Majority Forward announced a $480,000 media campaign against Edwards. Facing financial struggles, Edwards raised $155,000 last quarter compared to Ager’s $1.4 million. Edwards previously ousted Madison Cawthorn in the 2022 Republican primary.
Ethics Committee’s Censure Urging
The House Ethics Committee recommended censure due to Edwards’ inappropriate conduct with two young female staffers. Censure marks a serious public condemnation without removing a lawmaker from office.
The Committee’s press release emphasized its intent for a privileged resolution to be voted by the full House. Their report detailed Edwards’ failure to respect rules prohibiting sexual harassment, citing a pattern of mixing personal gifts and professional attention beyond standard boundaries.
Findings revealed over $1,000 worth of gifts, including jewelry, handbags, and trips outside professional norms. Edwards’ counsel’s response argued the findings exonerate him under House rules on sexual misconduct or harassment.
