The issue of accessing maternity care in Arkansas presents significant challenges, particularly for women in many parts of the state. Despite Arkansas being recognized for six years consecutively as the most pro-life state in America by Americans United for Life, the practical realities of maternity healthcare accessibility reveal a different story.
According to a report from the March of Dimes, 33 out of 75 counties in Arkansas, which accounts for 44 percent, lack essential maternity services. These counties are known as maternity care deserts. In such areas, there are no hospitals or birth centers that provide obstetric care, and no available obstetric clinicians.
This situation forces many women to drive long distances, often an hour or more, to reach the nearest facility that offers even routine prenatal appointments. Such journeys can be especially difficult for those without reliable transportation or for families with limited financial resources.
The lack of accessible maternity care not only affects women but also has broader implications for community health and wellbeing in these regions, suggesting a need for improved healthcare infrastructure and policies that focus on expanding access to critical maternity services across the state.
