Cheryl Reeve Wins Coach of the Year Amid Controversy

Cheryl Reeve added another WNBA Coach of the Year award to her accolades on Monday. Despite her success in basketball, her political views have sparked significant debate. The Minnesota Lynx coach received 40 out of 74 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, marking the fifth time she has earned this honor. Her team finished the season with a 33-11 record, the best in the WNBA.

Reeve’s advocacy for including males in women’s sports has been a contentious issue. This year’s award reminds us of the dynamics within the voting panel, which is predominantly left-leaning. This group often celebrates progressive activism while dismissing opposing views. Despite Minnesota finishing with the best record, the question arises whether Reeve’s political stance affected the voting process.

The Challenge of Winning Based on Records

Having a stellar record doesn’t always guarantee Coach of the Year honors. Last season, the Lynx secured a 34-10 record, yet Reeve only received two votes for the award. This season, with a slightly lower record and finishing ahead of Golden State, Reeve made a compelling case for herself again. She navigated her team through challenges, including an extended absence of key player Napheesa Collier.

Additionally, luck favored her with Rookie of the Year Olivia Miles, who was acquired in the 2026 WNBA Draft when the Dallas Wings chose Azzi Fudd instead.

Reeve’s Political Stance in Focus

Reeve has not shied away from discussing her stance on transgender rights in sports. Last week, in response to the controversy over her wearing a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt, she claimed that critics don’t want transgender individuals to exist. This strong statement highlighted the divide between her view and those who oppose males competing in female sports categories.

Golden State Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase, another advocate for inclusivity in sports, finished second in the Coach of the Year voting after winning last year. This shows a pattern of recognition for coaches with similar views.

Impact of Political Advocacy on Public Perception

Reeve emphasizes the emotional impact of her advocacy. She shared how parents of transgender children thanked her for her stance, suggesting it brought them comfort. However, Reeve’s position raises questions, as anecdotal endorsements do not establish the validity of her claims.

Reports suggest there is a nuanced dialogue around the mental health outcomes of transgender individuals receiving “gender-affirming care.” Various studies, including a Finnish study, indicate ongoing psychiatric needs after medical transition.

Challenges in Defending Positions

Reeve faces criticism for accusing her opponents of hatred, which can ostracize those with valid concerns. Questioning the boundaries in women’s sports should not be dismissed as bigotry. The debate calls for a respectful exchange rather than inflammatory accusations.

While Reeve is entitled to her advocacy, the manner in which she addresses dissenting views profoundly impacts ongoing discourse. Nonetheless, her achievement as Coach of the Year once again highlights her influence in the sports world.
