Adjustment to New Training Camp Format
The Chicago Blackhawks have concluded their training camp for the 2026-27 season. The shortened camp and preseason required quick lineup and scheme decisions for all teams. Well-established squads like the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights benefit from known player synergies, making lineup adjustments easier. For the Blackhawks, the lineup and player chemistry are still being fine-tuned.
On paper, the Blackhawks present their most enhanced roster in recent years. With the incoming talents of Patrick Kane and Bowen Byram, establishing player rapport will be crucial as they face the Golden Knights this Tuesday in Las Vegas.
We have to get to our numbers right away and create synergy and chemistry immediately,
said General Manager Kyle Davidson on day one of camp. Coach Jeff Blashill has employed the same lineup throughout, featuring Roman Kantserov, Frank Nazar, and Kane in the top line, with Alex Vlasic and Byram forming the top defensive pair. This configuration might change once injured captain Connor Bedard returns, likely in November.
Focus on Player Performance
Blashill acknowledges the team’s readiness remains undetermined until the opener. We haven’t played as a complete group yet,
he stated. Despite the incomplete lineup experience, Blashill expresses belief in this group’s capabilities.
The preseason offered players a chance to impress. Here’s who showed promise:
Bowen Byram
Defenseman Bowen Byram marked his debut with a standout performance against a less seasoned Minnesota Wild lineup. His hat trick led the Hawks to a 4-3 overtime victory. His power play prowess and full-strength plays were apparent, alongside developing chemistry with defensive-minded Vlasic.
We kind of have a natural chemistry,
said Byram regarding Vlasic. Despite failing to score in the preseason finale, Byram’s quick acclimation highlights his potential to contribute effectively, with Coach Blashill lauding his skill and charisma.
Roman Kantserov
Roman Kantserov, the 22-year-old Russian winger, showed promising chemistry with Kane, reflected in several one-timer shots. He scored his first unofficial NHL goal during a power play against the St. Louis Blues.
It’s unbelievable scoring in United Center, but it’s only preseason,
he remarked. His transition from Kontinental Hockey League provides him with confidence in his shooting abilities. Experimented briefly at center, he succeeded in majority of faceoffs but is expected to remain as a wing.
Kevin Korchinski
Despite being an important prospect, Kevin Korchinski faces challenges for adequate playtime amongst roster players. He showcased reliability in camp drills and accrued an assist during a preseason game. However, Coach Blashill hasn’t finalized Korchinski’s participation yet.
As we sit here today, he would be on the outside looking in,
mentioned Blashill. While there’s potential for involvement, waiver considerations complicate possible Rockford assignments, influencing management to retain him as a seventh defenseman.
With veteran Ian Cole on a one-year contract, Korchinski’s opportunity to make a significant impact may be on the horizon.
