In Arlington, Texas, the Chicago White Sox managed a decisive 4-2 win against the Texas Rangers. The game saw the Sox take a two-run lead in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom half, the Rangers loaded the bases with no outs, threatening to shift momentum. However, Sox starter Anthony Kay delivered a vital pitch, getting Elias Díaz to ground into a double play. Miguel Vargas, playing third base, fielded the ball, stepped on the bag, and threw to first. Although the Rangers scored, Kay then struck out Alejandro Osuna to end the inning, limiting the damage to one run.
“To escape that with only one run was huge,” Kay commented afterward. “Vargas made an excellent play at third, helping us get out of the jam.” Kay pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while recording four strikeouts and two walks. This performance helped the Sox secure their victory in front of a crowd of 31,127 at Globe Life Field.
Manager Will Venable praised Kay’s handling of the game. “He managed the game well,” Venable said. “Kay was competitive within the strike zone and executed the double play in a critical spot. He landed several effective sweepers, allowing us to control the game.” The win moved the Sox ahead in the American League Central division, giving them a one-game advantage over the Cleveland Guardians, following Cleveland’s loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Leading the Sox offense, Chase Meidroth hit four singles and drove in two runs. Andrew Benintendi added two hits and two RBIs. Braden Montgomery contributed with a single, a walk, and three runs. “It feels rewarding to deliver with runners in scoring positions,” Meidroth stated. “Thanks to this team effort, we secured this win.” Montgomery played a pivotal role, advancing on a wild pitch in the second inning and scoring on Meidroth’s single to give the Sox their initial 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Munetaka Murakami walked and later scored on another Meidroth single. Benintendi’s RBI single brought Montgomery home, extending the Sox lead to 3-1. Despite Kay conceding one run in the bottom of the fourth, he successfully evaded further trouble. Montgomery kept the momentum going in the sixth, moving from first to third on a hit-and-run single by Meidroth. Benintendi’s subsequent single increased the lead to 4-2.
The Sox bullpen was instrumental, with three relievers contributing eight strikeouts and no hits over four innings. Though fielding and throwing errors threatened in the sixth, reliever Jordan Hicks prevented the Rangers from capitalizing. Grant Taylor shone in the seventh and eighth innings, striking out five of six batters. Closer Bryan Hudson struck out two in a perfect ninth inning, securing the win and notching his fourth save.
Reflecting on the victory, Kay remarked, “Winning two games here after Toronto is a promising start to the second half.” The Sox’s commanding performance in Texas underscores their resilience and competitiveness as they proceed further into the season.
