Trade Strategies Ahead of Deadline

The Chicago White Sox have engaged in two trades this month, yet none have made a significant difference to the major-league lineup. With the trade deadline approaching on Monday, the team looks poised to act. Holding a 1½-game lead in the American League Central before facing the New York Yankees at Rate Field, the White Sox appear ready to buy.

Manager Will Venable conveyed confidence in the front office, stating, “I expect the deadline to come and go, and (general manager) Chris (Getz) and the group to do everything they can to make our team better. He’s shown commitment in this regard every step of the way.”

Potential Trade Targets

Catchers

The Sox haven’t had a whole lot of production at the plate from the players behind the plate.

Injuries have limited catcher Kyle Teel, who has appeared in just 19 games and is recovering from a left ankle sprain. Teel holds a batting average of .190 with two home runs and 14 RBIs. A return timeline of six to 12 weeks was given following his July 20 injury.

Other catchers, Edgar Quero and Drew Romo, have shouldered the load. Quero, called up after Teel’s injury, is batting .181, while Romo has managed a .137 average. The trade market for catchers suffered a setback with Shea Langeliers of the Athletics going down with a torn meniscus.

Available options include Tyler Stephenson from the Cincinnati Reds and Jonah Heim from the Athletics. Stephenson is hitting .248 with eight homers, while Heim has a .220 average with 10 homers this year.

Starting Pitchers

The innings are beginning to stack up for the Sox rotation.

Davis Martin, Sean Burke, and Anthony Kay are nearing their career-high inning counts. Martin has 111 innings, Burke 118 1/3 innings, and Kay is at 103 2/3 innings. Veterans like Erick Fedde and rookie Noah Schultz complete the starting rotation.

With contenders always eager to bolster their pitching, potential targets for the Sox include Reid Detmers from the Angels and Clay Holmes from the Mets. Detmers has recorded a 4.03 ERA with 145 strikeouts, while Holmes boasts a 2.39 ERA but is recovering from a fracture.

Relief Pitchers

The White Sox bullpen has performed well, ranking fourth-best with a 2.70 ERA since June 23. During this period, the bullpen combined for 140 strikeouts, allowing a .203 opponents’ average. Players like Jordan Hicks, Bryan Hudson, and Grant Taylor have been effective in high-leverage situations.

Tanner McDougal and José Urquidy could rise from the farm system to offer additional relief. San Diego Padres’ closer Mason Miller, with multiple suitors, stands out as a fascinating option, despite his team’s standing two games behind the National League wild card.

Amid these speculations, Venable praises his players for staying focused on present challenges rather than trade rumors. “I don’t hear a bunch of conversations about the deadline,” he remarked. “We’re focused on improving daily and maximizing each game.”
