TORONTO — Sean Burke delivered an impressive performance on Sunday, allowing only two hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings for the Chicago White Sox. The team’s victory over the Toronto Blue Jays ended in a 3-0 triumph at Rogers Centre, witnessed by a sellout crowd of 41,288.
Burke, along with relievers Bryan Hudson and Grant Taylor, orchestrated a four-hit shutout. Colson Montgomery led the Sox’s offense with two hits, including a solo home run. This win brought the Sox back to first place in the American League Central, outpacing the Cleveland Guardians, who lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pitching Success
Sean Burke received valuable insights from Davis Martin, leading to his stellar performance. Burke retired the first ten batters on Sunday, supported by Randal Grichuk’s defensive play at the left-field wall.
Burke’s only allowed hit was an infield single by Nathan Lukes in the fourth inning, followed by a single from Daulton Varsho in the seventh. His outing consisted of 98 pitches, striking out five and walking one. Manager Will Venable praised his fastball control.
“He was awesome,” Venable said. “We talk about the fastball — he was in the zone with the fastball.”
Burke acknowledged Martin’s help in strategizing against the Blue Jays. Conversations with Martin provided insights into enhancing his sequencing and command.
Burke stated, “I don’t think my stuff was as good as it has been the past couple of starts but the sequencing was really good.” He credited catcher Drew Romo for effective game-calling.
Offensive Adjustments
The White Sox hitters adapted well throughout the game. Colson Montgomery struck out initially but later secured the team’s first hit in the fourth inning. His single advanced Miguel Vargas to third, leading to a 1-0 advantage with Andrew Benintendi’s sacrifice fly.
Montgomery’s 24th home run in the sixth inning expanded the lead to 2-0.
Montgomery remarked, “Even though I like swinging early, seeing every pitch is huge in that at-bat.”
Benintendi added a double and scored on Braden Montgomery’s single, making the final score 3-0. Braden Montgomery also contributed with two singles.
Montgomery highlighted the need for adjustment against young pitchers. “Sometimes it just takes one or two at-bats to kind of get adjusted. And I felt like we got better throughout the game.”
Strong Post-All-Star Start
Venable expressed satisfaction with the team’s diverse methods of winning the series.
“The first game here, with the offense, and then today it was all about the pitching for us.”
The White Sox showed resilience returning from the All-Star break.
Pitcher Burke emphasized the difficulty of playing against the Blue Jays in Toronto. “Coming up here is no easy task,” he noted.
Starting the second half of the season with a series win has indeed boosted team morale.
