Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Discusses Preseason Plans for Patrick Mahomes

Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced that quarterback Patrick Mahomes might not participate in their preseason opener against the Rams next week, and there is a possibility he could skip all three exhibition games. This decision follows Mahomes’ knee surgery in December to repair torn ligaments. Despite this, Mahomes has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, taking part in the entire offseason program and attending training camp punctually.

Dr. Dan Cooper, the surgeon who performed Mahomes’ knee operation, cleared him for unrestricted practice late last month. Reid commented, “There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him. Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I will play him in the second or third game, but percentages probably lean against doing that.” While Mahomes’ vast experience reduces his need for preseason play, his competitive nature may still lead to some field time during the second game against Tampa Bay.

Mahomes has expressed a desire to experience his first significant hit to fully return to the game. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have several quarterbacks requiring preseason work. They acquired veteran Justin Fields from the Jets as a primary backup, who could benefit from gaining experience in the new offense. Additionally, Garrett Nussmeier, a former LSU quarterback chosen in the seventh round as a project, also needs game experience.

Reid stated, “We’ve got new people behind (Mahomes) that need some work. The more reps they get, the better.”

Heading into the weekend, the Chiefs have another practice scheduled before taking Sunday off. Several players are currently managing injuries. Offensive guard Trey Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler, saw a hip specialist as a precautionary measure this week. Reid downplayed the injury’s severity, assuring, “he’s going to be OK.” Other injuries do not appear to be long-term issues, including hamstring, groin, back, knee, and shoulder injuries affecting various players.

Cyrus Allen, the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick, returned to practice for the first time since sustaining a shin bruise on Monday. However, he was limited to non-contact drills. Reid remarked on Allen’s progress, “He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive. He’s at all the meetings. He’s focused in. He wants to get out there. He doesn’t want to miss. He’s been working hard. We’ll just ease him back in.”
