Christian McCaffrey’s Australian Adventure: A Lesson in Slang

Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers embarked on an eye-opening journey during the team’s trip to Australia. The trip proved to be an educational experience, especially when it came to understanding the local slang.

During a postgame press conference, McCaffrey shared a humorous encounter he had at a barber shop. At age 30, he recounted, “I was getting a haircut a few days ago and one of the barbers looks at me and says, ‘Looks cracker.'” This sparked a moment of confusion. Commonly, ‘cracker’ is understood in the U.S. as a derogatory term for White people. However, in Australia, it meant something entirely different—a compliment signifying that his haircut looked great.

McCaffrey responded with a puzzled, “Sorry, what did you say?” This led to laughter from teammates George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, who were present at the press conference. “I didn’t know what it meant,” McCaffrey continued, realizing that the remark was indeed flattering, “I guess that means it looks good. But that was funny.”

These encounters underline the cultural differences that international travel can reveal. In Australia, ‘cracker’ is slang for describing something as fantastic or impressive. McCaffrey shared, “He said (cracker) again, I said, ‘Dude, I hear that every Sunday.’ That was good, we had a good moment. I enjoy all the slang.”

Off the field, the 49ers had reason to celebrate following their convincing 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. During the game, McCaffrey carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards and caught five passes accumulating 20 yards.

In postgame logistics, rookie Kaelon Black joined in by splitting carries with McCaffrey, presumably to maintain the veteran’s health and effectiveness for the season. Black finished with 14 carries for 65 yards.
