The Cleveland Browns have decided to continue with Deshaun Watson as their quarterback, despite growing calls from fans and media for him to be benched after a disappointing season opener. Head coach Todd Monken confirmed on Monday that Watson will remain the starter for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Monken explained his reasons for sticking with Watson, emphasizing that the patience for this decision is not endless. After reviewing footage from the Browns’ 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Monken saw enough potential in Watson to justify his continued role. “It’s only been two weeks he’s gotten all the reps,” Monken noted, pointing out the split practice time during training camp between Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
Monken highlighted several positives in Watson’s performance, suggesting areas for improvement. “There were good things on film, things to build on,” he added, acknowledging that while Watson wasn’t perfect, there is room for growth. Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
However, Watson’s tenure as the starting quarterback may be short-lived if he fails to show improvement against the Buccaneers. This week’s game is crucial, given the circumstances surrounding it. The Browns face a Tampa team led by Baker Mayfield, whom they traded away after acquiring Watson in 2022. Mayfield has found success with the Buccaneers, while Watson has struggled, posing a potential embarrassment for the Browns.
Another reason Watson’s position is uncertain is the upcoming home game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. Watson’s relationship with Browns fans has been tense, with fans booing him in preseason games. Watson criticized the fans for their reaction, claiming it felt like playing 17 road games. His return to the home field, especially if his performance doesn’t improve, might provoke a severe reaction from the crowd.
“We got to play better around him. We got to call it better,” Monken said, expressing a desire for the team to support Watson more effectively. With only one more week to prove himself, Watson must rally to win over both the fans and his team.
