CNN Faces Changes Amid Paramount Merger

Fox News articles are now available for listening. A significant shift is occurring at CNN as new ownership looms with Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. A CNN staff member expressed a sentiment of urgency, stating, ‘Let’s get this done.’

Paramount’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has successfully bypassed a major hurdle: an antitrust lawsuit led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and several Democratic State AGs. Instead of a court battle set for March 2027, the parties reached a settlement on Monday, allowing Paramount CEO David Ellison to gain control over two major Hollywood studios and news networks—CNN and CBS News.

The settlement includes an independent editorial board to oversee both news agencies. Reports indicate internal discord at CNN since this settlement, though sentiments appear mixed. One staff member noted a shift toward acceptance of the merger, emphasizing a need for direction.

The perception that there is less opposition shouldn’t be mistaken for a change in mindset, according to another CNN employee.

CNN staff brace for imminent changes. Layoffs are anticipated, potentially affecting CNN. Leadership changes are likely, questioning whether CEO Mark Thompson will remain or if Bari Weiss, CBS News editor-in-chief, might take a joint role.

A CNN employee stated the importance of making a clear leadership decision quickly. ‘Ellison will face pressure to decide, not temporarily retain Thompson to avoid challenges,’ they remarked.

While the merger provides future clarity, the prospect of ‘dramatic’ cuts looms, likely impacting the newsroom. ‘CNN will be diminished,’ a staffer asserted, noting this trend affects legacy media broadly.

Neither CNN nor Paramount provided comments. Concerns arise regarding editorial direction under Ellison, fearing a potential pro-MAGA slant due to his connections with President Trump. Critics worry about CBS News chief Bari Weiss having a dual oversight role, despite her left-leaning affiliations.

Ellison has promised to preserve editorial independence. In a New York Times essay, he clarified his bipartisan voting record and emphasized a commitment to fact-based journalism.

Great news organizations like CNN and CBS News must report impartially. That requires diverse perspectives, not partisan alignment, Ellison stated.
