Cody Rhodes faced a challenging moment at SummerSlam when his past rival, Randy Orton, unexpectedly intervened. During a high-stakes match against CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Rhodes and Punk delivered an intense performance.
Their match was closely contested, with both wrestlers going move for move, each aiming for victory. However, the unexpected presence of Randy Orton changed the course of the night.
As Rhodes attempted a high-risk Cody Cutter from the top rope, he accidentally knocked out the referee. This created an opportunity for Orton to enter the ring. Known as ‘The Viper,’ Orton hit Rhodes with a surprise RKO.
Punk seized the moment, executing a Go to Sleep move on Rhodes, leading to a successful pin.
Orton’s attack was a stark reminder of when he last faced Rhodes at WrestleMania 42. Although Rhodes won that encounter, Orton managed to leave Rhodes in a vulnerable state then, as he did during SummerSlam.
Following his victory, CM Punk extended a challenge to the SmackDown roster. He invited competitors who could meet him in the ring, pointing out Gunther and Trick Williams as potential opponents. Gunther gained attention by defeating Nick Aldis earlier in the event.
The path to finding Punk’s next challenger sets up more drama. A match between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor will determine the No. 1 contender on the second night of SummerSlam.
