A small coffee shop chain in New York City has ignited controversy with a social media post condemning Congressman Dan Goldman. The post, widely seen on Instagram, underscores ongoing tensions in one of New York’s progressive and predominantly Jewish districts regarding support for Israel.
Goldman had visited Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on a Sunday. He was with his 7-year-old daughter and outside his district. This visit coincided with the final day for early voting in a Democratic primary race where Goldman faces a significant challenge.
Hours after the visit, the shop’s Instagram featured a caption alongside a surveillance image of Goldman, implying he was unwelcome. The caption, attributed to the shop’s owner, was pointedly harsh. It read: “We see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?”
The post further declared that the shop does not serve “racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers or anyone in between.” It regretted not recognizing Goldman earlier to prevent serving him.
Goldman, whose defense of Israel has become contentious in his re-election campaign in the 10th District, responded in the post’s comments. He explained that he visited Poetica so his daughter could use the restroom and purchased coffee to show appreciation to an employee for this courtesy.
