Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick criticized the Trump administration during a recent interview with ‘The View.’ He claimed the NFL supported this administration politically. Co-host Ana Navarro highlighted that Kaepernick, after beginning his protests, left the 49ers and was never picked by another team. He sued the NFL for collusion, alleging team owners intentionally excluded him. The case concluded with a confidential settlement.
Kaepernick linked his exclusion to politics and power dynamics. He discussed his new book, ‘The Perilous Fight,’ which covers his football career and his decision to kneel during the national anthem. Kaepernick has faced significant backlash for his protests during NFL games.
“I think it was political,” Kaepernick stated. “I also think it was about power. I didn’t protest the NFL. Their response to the protest is quite informative regarding their political stance.”
Kaepernick said the players, predominantly Black, have significant influence over the league’s direction. He suggested that if NFL players unified and refused to play, the league would quickly face business challenges.
Despite support for his protests, Kaepernick received threats and backlash. He reflected on his upbringing and historical precedents of Black athletes facing opposition for protests. He expressed surprise at the pushback against the notion that police should not kill Black individuals, emphasizing a desire for a society where all individuals feel safe and have opportunities to thrive.
Kaepernick accused the NFL of blackballing him for his activism and expressed his decision to no longer support the league. His activism began ten years ago in 2016 when he kneeled during the national anthem as a protest against police brutality and racial inequality. After opting out of his 49ers contract in 2017, no team hired him. In a recent interview, he reiterated his stance against supporting an organization he believes has marginalized him and other protesting players.
