Colman Domingo Remembers High School Days with Will Smith

Colman Domingo reminisces about high school with Will Smith. Though Domingo is now a recognized actor, he wasn’t the popular kid back then.

On the podcast Friends Keep Secrets, hosted by Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, Domingo shared his memories. “West Philly, born and raised,” he said, referring to his roots. He mentioned attending Overbrook High School in Philadelphia alongside Smith. They shared gym and science classes, although Smith, 58, was a year ahead. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Smith’s hip-hop duo, was already forming before his graduation in 1985.

Domingo, 56, clarified, “We were never friends. He was the cool kid, and I was the nerd.” Smith was notably popular due to his local success as a rapper. Domingo wasn’t part of Smith’s social circle, admitting, “I didn’t go [to the shows], I wasn’t a cool kid.”

The last time Domingo saw Smith, it wasn’t in Hollywood but at a restaurant where Domingo worked as a waiter. Smith, by then, was a distinguished actor and musician. Although Smith didn’t immediately remember him, they eventually shared a warm hug.

Despite both working in the entertainment industry, Domingo and Smith haven’t crossed paths professionally since. Domingo concluded, “I’m sure we’ll see each other at some point. And there’ll be warmth and a shared history from Philadelphia.”

Smith’s upcoming projects include the action thriller Supermax. Domingo will star in An Innocent Girl, The Comebacker, and the Netflix series The Four Seasons.
