Colombia’s Polarized Election
On Sunday, Colombians will cast their votes in an intensely divided election. The competition is between the current leftist political movement in power and a right-wing outsider supported by Donald Trump.
Candidates in Spotlight
The election confronts Senator Iván Cepeda, a dedicated human rights advocate, against Abelardo De La Espriella, a former criminal defense attorney intent on a rigid stance against guerrilla groups and drug traffickers.
Cepeda, 63, is known for his role in talks that led to the 2016 peace agreement with FARC, aiming to ease longstanding conflict. He represents President Gustavo Petro’s party and commits to maintaining policies such as anti-poverty initiatives, land reforms, and discussions with armed factions.
Trump’s Influence in Latin America
The endorsement of De La Espriella by Trump, who criticized Cepeda as a “Radical Left Marxist,” has garnered international interest. This scenario represents Trump’s ongoing practice of endorsing right-wing figures in Latin America amid regional shifts toward conservatism, fueled by escalating insecurity concerns.
