A man from Washington state, Juan Martinez, was mistakenly detained by ICE agents in late July despite not being the intended target. Martinez, who has lived in the U.S. for over 25 years, was arrested without cause according to his attorney, Lisa Seifert. She stated that Martinez, a well-known figure in the Conway community, was simply doing his job at a local gas station at the time of his arrest.
Originally from Mexico, Martinez entered the United States in 2000 and has been seeking permanent residency through his U.S. citizen brother. He was aware of ICE’s presence near his workplace, raising concerns that his recent vehicle purchase might have contributed to the confusion. Prosecutors later admitted that ICE was searching for a different individual, possibly linked to the previous owner of Martinez’s car.
As of the recent report, Martinez remains in custody at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 8, where his attorney hopes for a positive outcome regarding his residency application.
Community efforts have raised over $9,300 to support Martinez, highlighting his integral role in Conway. Local residents described him as a friendly and familiar face, humorously nicknamed the ‘Mayor of Conway’ due to his wide network of acquaintances.
‘Juan is a beloved friend and community member in Conway,’ a fundraiser message states. ‘He brought kindness, laughter, and conversation to everyone he encountered.’
Tim Ferrell, who has known Martinez for nearly a decade, advocates for his friend’s release, emphasizing Martinez’s intelligence and personable nature. Ferrell’s understanding and empathy for Martinez’s situation prompted him to assist in securing legal representation.
Residents like Lindsey Brooks have noticed Martinez’s absence in the community. The emotional impact was felt by her family, highlighting the communal support surrounding his situation.
Attorney Lisa Seifert shared that Martinez is maintaining a positive mindset during his detention, engaging in activities such as meditation and attending religious services. His positive attitude and community connections offer hope for his future.
