Community Stands Behind Detained Immigrant Business Owner

In the small town of Paris, Illinois, Jose Fiscal Belli’s life has taken a drastic turn. Previously, he lived contentedly with his family, running Main Street Cafe and co-owning a Mexican restaurant in Clinton, Indiana. Known for his involvement in community activities, he coached Little League and volunteered as a Spanish translator for the police.

But now, at age 32, Jose finds himself in ICE custody after being arrested in Indianapolis for a parking error. His detention at Oldham County Jail in Kentucky has left a significant gap in his community, which is typically in favor of President Trump’s immigration policies.

The local newspaper, The Prairie Press, featured Jose on its front page, dubbing him as “one of ours.” In response, the community has rallied. Children threatened to quit baseball, a fundraiser was held, and even Republican leaders showed support for his release. Jose’s photo with his family has become a symbol of their struggle.

“Everybody I talk to wants him home. I mean, that’s it.” – Mayor Craig Smith

Jose’s journey began when he was brought to the U.S. as a teenager. Over the years, he built a life in Indiana with his wife, Courtney. They attempted to legalize his status through marriage but discovered an old deportation order. With Trump’s policies shifting, Jose’s arrest on July 21 has been a wakeup call for the community.

Despite their best efforts and Jose’s clean record, an immigration judge denied him bond. His attorney highlighted the harsh turn of immigration policies under Trump, contrasting previous administrations where Jose might have fought his case while free.

The arrest affected Courtney’s nursing school plans and their hopes for stability after purchasing the cafe. The anxiety of possible deportation looms large, though community support has been a balm.

Each morning at Main Street Cafe, patrons inquire about Jose. Despite skepticism at first, they grew to appreciate his contributions. Billy Henson, a regular diner customer, admits liking Jose and hoping for a positive resolution.

“The guy’s trying to make a living, been here, what, 15 years? … He only screwed up one time and now he’s paying for it.” – Daniel Bruner, Edgar County Commissioner

The town’s sentiments are complex. Chris and Crystal White, Courtney’s Republican parents, now feel the impact of immigration enforcement deeply. They acknowledge a shift in their political allegiance, expressing regret over their support for policies that separate families.

In response to Jose’s arrest, the community collected extensive character references highlighting his positive influence. Supporters range from public officials to local educators, all attesting to Jose’s contributions.

Paris Mayor Craig Smith urges for a broader discussion, arguing for an evaluation of immigrants’ contributions rather than their entry method. The controversy highlights the tension within communities that support Trump but care for their neighbors.

Jose continues to communicate with his family amid difficult circumstances in detention. He insists he’s not a criminal and remains focused on reuniting with his family. His story resonates at a national level, reflecting the broader debate on immigration enforcement and human rights.
