Conservative activist Robby Starbuck achieved a significant legal milestone against Google. A Delaware Superior Court ruling permits his defamation lawsuit to continue. Last October, Starbuck initiated legal action seeking at least $15 million. He alleges that Google’s AI programs defamed him by falsely depicting him as a ‘monster’ through ‘AI hallucinations.’
Judge Meghan Adams stated the allegations are substantial enough to support a claim for emotional distress at this stage, allowing the case to proceed to discovery.
Legal Victory Against Google
Starbuck celebrated the progress on social media. He questioned whether political bias directed the AI to lie about him, or if other factors like rogue programming or negligent release were involved. Discovery will uncover what Google knew and who authorized the spread of these lies.
Starbuck remarked, ‘Today is a historic victory.’ He emphasized the importance of holding powerful entities accountable.
Ensuring AI Accountability
Starbuck expressed hope that the lawsuit would ensure AI cannot harm individuals, whether through defamation or future harm. He highlighted the need for a boundary to prevent AI-related damage.
Google has not responded to requests for comment. The lawsuit indicates platforms like Bard, Gemini, and Gemma have persisted in disseminating false information about Starbuck since 2023, despite cease-and-desist notices. The claims included accusations of serious misconduct.
Starbuck shared that the lawsuit became necessary when Google’s AI accused him of severe crimes, stressing the urgent need to stop the false narratives.
