Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White made headlines after defending DiJonai Carrington, who struck Cunningham during a drive to the basket. The foul was severe enough that officials upgraded it to a Flagrant 2, leading to Carrington’s ejection.
“Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary… Yeah, it’s intentional,” Cunningham remarked.
Despite Cunningham’s firm stance, White shared a different perspective, suggesting Carrington did not intend to strike Cunningham’s neck. Though acknowledging the foul as hard, White defended Carrington’s competitive nature.
Understanding Coaches’ Perspectives
White’s comments appear aimed at preventing further dispute. Coaches often face challenges in assessing player fouls and deciding whether to escalate the situation.
White’s history with Carrington, having coached her previously, might influence her views. Yet, considering Cunningham’s strong reaction, support from her coach might have been expected.

After the foul and ejection, Carrington stirred controversy by posting “White Privilege” on social media, leaving intentions behind the post unclear. White refrained from commenting on Carrington’s actions online.
Cunningham expressed her view that the incident wasn’t about race, comparing the situation to an event last year where she faced similar consequences.
While coaches aren’t necessarily obligated to label opposing players harshly, Cunningham’s stark view might have warranted more direct support from her coach.
