Controversy Over Influencer’s Arrest Linked to U.S. Foreign Policy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Beto Coral’s criticism of a presidential candidate in Colombia undermines U.S. foreign policy. Franklin Humberto Coral Garrido, widely recognized as Beto Coral, is a progressive influencer known for supporting President Gustavo Petro of Colombia. President Petro, a left-leaning leader, has had tensions with former President Trump. Coral’s public opposition to Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing candidate backed by Trump, led to his arrest.

The Trump administration detained Coral, a Colombian immigrant, in Phoenix after his criticism. Coral arrived in the U.S. in 2015 on a tourist visa and has a pending asylum application. Secretary of State Rubio’s memo highlighted that Coral engaged in political activities supporting Petro’s government and opposed a presidential candidate.

Allowing Coral Garrido to remain in the United States undermines U.S. foreign policy interests in Colombia’s democratic processes and signals that foreign nationals may use U.S. platforms to conduct politically motivated disinformation campaigns and litigation targeting foreign democratic actors without consequence, Rubio wrote in the memo.

Rubio has used his authority to recommend deportation of various immigrants, including those with green cards. His memos often argue that these individuals’ presence in the U.S. conflicts with foreign policy. Past targets include individuals showing opposition to Israel, like Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student arrested the previous year.
