The U.S. Treasury Department is preparing a $250 bill with President Donald Trump’s portrait for the nation’s 250th anniversary. This initiative requires a change in federal law, which currently prohibits living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency.
Legislative Measures and Treasury’s Stance
The Treasury Department, as part of routine procedures, prepares for potential legislative changes. Bessent from the Treasury stated, “We prepare things in advance to align with potential legislative outcomes, but adhere to current law.” If passed, this would be the first time Trump’s portrait appears on U.S. currency.
Democratic lawmakers, voicing strong opposition, argue the proposal centers more on Trump’s legacy than on celebrating the country’s anniversary.
Legislative Process
Republican South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson introduced the bill in February 2025. It coincides with America’s July birthday and serves as a critique of Biden’s administration and economic policies. Currently, the bill is under review in the House Financial Services Committee.
At present, the Federal Reserve issues seven denominations. Kentucky Republican Rep. Andy Barr shared a mock-up of the bill featuring red, white, and blue colors alongside Trump’s image.
Key Views and Criticisms
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated that current mandates bar living individuals from appearing on currency and require it to say, “In God we trust.” Democrats criticize the proposal on social media, questioning its focus on Trump’s legacy rather than the national celebration.
Hillary Clinton remarked on the economic value of the proposed bill in an X post. Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries suggested the focus should be on celebrating the broader American journey. Virginia Sen. Mark Warner highlighted economic concerns, suggesting Trump’s priorities are misplaced as families struggle with rising costs.
The Democratic National Committee listed what it perceives as misplaced Republican priorities, noting Trump’s perceived self-focus.
The Treasury has previously stated Trump’s and Secretary Bessent’s signatures will appear on future currency to mark the anniversary.
