Controversy Surrounding Gorillaz and Macklemore’s Pro-Palestinian Activism

The English band Gorillaz, led by frontman Damon Albarn, has inserted itself into an ongoing controversy involving rapper Macklemore, who was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour. During a performance in Florida, Albarn prominently displayed a Palestinian flag, urging the audience to maintain their stance and never remain neutral.

Fox News Digital has reached out to both Gorillaz and Ed Sheeran for comments on the situation.

Gorillaz is among several artists who have used their platforms to advocate for anti-Israel sentiments following the events of October 7. The band previously participated in the Together for Palestine concert in 2025, supporting Palestinian causes. At the Glastonbury Festival in 2024, Albarn openly questioned the audience’s support for Palestine, prompting them to express their feelings about the conflict.

Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour after advocating for a “Free Palestine” during his performances, leading to backlash against Sheeran from progressive voices. Although Sheeran’s representatives clarified his non-involvement in Macklemore’s removal, the controversy has persisted.

Macklemore has continued his activism, defending his pro-Palestinian stance through social media. In a lengthy Instagram statement, the rapper asserted his commitment to the cause, emphasizing that neither he nor Sheeran are victims, with both having successful careers and platforms.

Ed Sheeran has addressed the controversy, stating his intention to avoid political commentary in his music. However, he acknowledged the humanitarian crisis related to the recent events in Israel and Gaza, expressing the need for awareness and concern.

Sheeran emphasized his focus on unity through his music, distancing himself from any political agenda, but recognized the severe implications of the conflict, both historically and currently.
