Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, has been criticized for associating with Piker, known for provocative statements, including blaming America for 9/11 and praising controversial figures like Mao Zedong. Democrats are evaluating Piker’s influence, particularly in general elections.
Chris Hayes remarked that campaigning with Piker may not benefit general elections. He noted the challenge of controlling Piker’s statements and mentioned Piker’s responsibility given his influence. Hayes suggested Piker needs to be more careful with his words if he wishes to contribute to the movement.
While the episode remains available, the clip was missing from X, leading to observations by Michael LaRosa, a former special assistant to President Biden. LaRosa criticized El-Sayed’s ties with Piker, especially after Piker’s prior statement that “America deserved 9/11.” The clip’s deletion and the repost with added context occurred after notable backlash.
Shannon Watts, a gun control advocate, criticized the removal, implying pressure from Piker or El-Sayed’s camp. LaRosa found the move embarrassing for the podcast, highlighting the tension within Democratic circles.
Additionally, Julian Epstein, a former Democratic legal counsel, expressed his support for a Republican opponent to El-Sayed. He described Piker as lacking depth in economic or historical understanding and criticized his shock-jock tactics.
Pod Save America has previously challenged Biden allies, having been among early Democrats to suggest Biden step down for the 2024 election. The podcast, run by former Obama staffers, had criticized narratives suggesting Biden’s mental health decline using misleading videos.
