FOX News reports that Graham Platner’s departure from his Senate campaign has left behind significant controversies that may impact another crucial midterm race in Maine.
Impact on Congressional Race
Former Governor Paul LePage, the Republican nominee for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, points to Platner’s controversies as having a potential effect on Matt Dunlap, the Democratic nominee. LePage describes Dunlap’s association with Platner and other progressive figures like Bernie Sanders as a miscalculation.
Dunlap campaign manager Harry Burke labeled LePage’s criticisms as desperate attempts to divert attention from Republican issues.
Platner’s Controversies
Platner had initially garnered support from prominent progressives such as Bernie Sanders before exiting the race following rape allegations from a former partner. These were just the latest in a series of controversies, including inflammatory online comments and accusations involving a Nazi-like tattoo.
Platner denied these accusations, labelling them false. Nonetheless, his campaign suffered from consistent revelations that put him on the defensive.
Paul LePage stated, “Way, way too close to Platner. Way too close to Bernie. Way too close to AOC. That whole gang.”
Political Fallout
The Republican National Committee sees the allegations as an opportunity to criticize Democrats who previously supported Platner. Republican Chair Joe Gruters stated that any Democrat who endorsed Platner was endorsing a rapist.
Dunlap had appeared with Platner in a campaign event, yet he called for Platner to withdraw once the allegations emerged.
Dunlap’s campaign manager, Burke, attacked LePage for alleged inconsistencies in his residency and tax filings, while LePage criticized Democrats on issues of support.
Voter Reaction
There seems to be skepticism about the effectiveness of Republican attacks, according to CJ Warnke of the House Majority PAC, who suggests voters care more about economic issues rather than Platner’s controversies.
Despite this, various political analysts currently favor LePage in the Maine congressional race.
The Cook Political Report and Inside Elections consider the district likely to lean Republican, with additional support from Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the Center for Politics.
