Popular left-wing streamer Hasan Piker faced criticism from prominent Democrats following his controversial comments regarding Jewish Americans’ support for Israel. Piker argued that such support is worsening antisemitism. This prompted Abdul El-Sayed, Democratic Michigan Senate candidate and ally to Piker, to refute his involvement, stating, “nobody speaks for him.”
Piker’s remarks became a focal point in the highly competitive Michigan Senate race. During the Democratic primary, Piker campaigned alongside El-Sayed, frequently discussing Israel and U.S. foreign policy on Twitch. His controversial statements have divided Michigan Democrats and drawn criticism from Mike Rogers, the GOP Senate nominee, who attempts to associate Piker’s comments with El-Sayed.
During a recent Twitch stream, Piker criticized Jeremy Moss, a candidate for a suburban Michigan Congressional seat. Moss has not endorsed El-Sayed, expressing the need for outreach to Oakland County’s Jewish community. Piker spoke against the monolithic portrayal of Jews linking them to Israel and Zionism, calling it dangerous propaganda. He argued such portrayals could risk American Jews’ safety.
El-Sayed’s campaign issued a statement distancing from Piker’s comments, emphasizing that “nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople.” El-Sayed expressed his commitment to Jewish safety, devised antisemitism, and rejected rhetoric that threatens communities.
Mike Rogers criticized El-Sayed for insufficiently distancing himself from Piker, labeling his stance a “sham statement” and erroneously calling Piker his “running mate.” Rogers expressed this continued alliance as typical political manipulation.
Numerous Democrats, including Michigan Rep. Hillary Scholten and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, condemned Piker’s remarks as antisemitic. Moss, a Democratic nominee, rejected out-of-state commentary on local Jewish concerns, vowing not to support Rogers.
At an anti-Islam demonstration press conference in Michigan, El-Sayed openly discussed differences with Moss on Israel and foreign policy, yet maintained these disagreements should not compromise Jewish safety.
Piker defended his statements as warnings against antisemitism. He expressed frustration over being used to divert attention from campaign issues, referring to the backlash as a “smear campaign.” Despite distancing from Piker, El-Sayed recognized Piker’s vast audience as an asset, stating public discourse involves disagreeing viewpoints.
As a notable streamer with millions of followers and a strong progressive base, Piker’s influence reached the campaign trail. However, he continues to face scrutiny for inflammatory comments, including past provocative remarks about Hamas and 9/11, illustrating the challenges of aligning with controversial figures in political campaigns.
