Controversy Surrounds NY Socialist Nominee Over Marxist Statements

Democratic socialist candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier is facing criticism for past social media posts praising Marxism and communist ideals. These tweets have sparked a significant backlash, especially after they were deleted. Prominent party leaders are avoiding responsibility, while modern moderates, like Senator John Fetterman, demand clarity on the party’s leftward shift.

Avila Chevalier, supported by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), managed the Twitter account Darializabonet, which was removed in June 2022. According to CNN, the account praised Karl Marx, lamented the lack of Marxist literature in libraries, and quoted the controversial figure Assata Shakur.

“I just cannot get over the fact that the universe has foisted upon us the perfect illustration of literally every failing of capitalism and people are still like we can’t be communists cuz there won’t be enough types of soup,” a post retweeted by Avila Chevalier stated.

The candidate has already faced condemnation for previous posts advocating for the abolition of the police and controversial statements involving the American flag. The latest CNN report has intensified criticism, attracting widespread disapproval from conservatives and moderates alike, both online and on television.

Sen. John Fetterman, in a Fox News interview and on social media, questioned if Democrats will continue to defend “Crazypants” or act ignorant of the situation. UPenn student Eyal Yakoby and CNN political commentator Scott Jennings have also criticized the notion that socialism and communism are distinctly different.

Avila Chevalier’s outspoken nature has led figures like reality TV personality Spencer Pratt and Republican Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana to voice strong disapproval. They associate her views with historical atrocities linked to socialism and communism.

Despite the controversies, Avila Chevalier succeeded in the New York 13th Congressional District Democratic primary against incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat and is anticipated to win against her Republican rival in the predominantly Democratic city. Fox News Digital attempted to contact Avila Chevalier for her response regarding the situation.
