The New York Police Department (NYPD) will not provide security for New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, as she visits Syria and Lebanon. These countries are classified as level 4 travel advisory zones by the State Department due to terrorism concerns.
A representative from the NYPD stated, “We do not send officers to countries with level 4 travel advisories for discretionary reasons such as personal travel.” Previously, the mayor’s office reported that Duwaji would have an NYPD security detail during her trip. However, this plan is no longer in place due to protocol and potential risks.
Rama Duwaji plans to visit family in these regions in September, as reported by the New York Post. The State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list includes both Syria and Lebanon.
“Our detectives put themselves in harm’s way every day protecting New Yorkers,” said Scott Munro, President of the NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA). “The DEA would never remain silent if our members were asked to travel to a dangerous, off-limits foreign country for anything other than a legitimate law-enforcement or intelligence operation.”
The confusion over the security detail was attributed to a “miscommunication” within the mayor’s staff. The controversy has drawn criticism due to Mamdani’s previous stance on policing. He has been vocal against the NYPD and has expressed views aligned with defunding the police.
In earlier statements, Mamdani criticized the NYPD, describing it as “wicked & corrupt.” He has supported defunding and dismantling the police force. His comments have sparked debates, especially given his wife’s security arrangements and the subsequent clarification that NYPD officers would not be accompanying her overseas.
The mayor’s history includes critiques of both the police department and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). During a Democratic Socialists of America convention in 2023, he linked the two institutions controversially.
Zohran Mamdani’s campaign promises earlier did not advocate defunding the police, yet his comments over time reflect a shift in stance. Recently, he faced backlash when attempting to address a pro-police gathering, resulting in boos from the audience.
