Controversy Surrounds Proposal to Remove Customs Officers from Major Airports

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has proposed a plan that could significantly impact international air travel in major cities like Boston, New York, and Los Angeles. The proposal suggests removing customs officers from airports in cities known for their liberal policies, such as those limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

This plan has drawn strong opposition from leaders in the travel and business sectors, who argue that it would disrupt travel and harm the economy at key ports of entry. Customs officers are essential for monitoring goods in and out of the country and for handling international flights. Without them, these airports would be unable to accept incoming international flights.

A statement from a coalition of travel and business trade groups, including the U.S. Travel Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the potential nationwide chaos that could result from reducing Customs and Border Protection operations at major airports. They warned that even changes at a few gateway airports could have a widespread impact.

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy also expressed concerns to lawmakers, stating that the proposal is not advisable. He highlighted the importance of maintaining accessibility for travelers from both national and international origins, indicating that air travel should not be influenced by political differences.
