Recent renovations at Washington’s Reflecting Pool, initiated by former President Donald Trump, have become a source of controversy due to allegations of vandalism and subsequent damage. The renovations involved painting the pool blue in preparation for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
Trump has claimed on his social media platform that deliberate acts of vandalism have damaged the pool. He stated, “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool.” He added that such acts extended to damaging the grass just outside the pool.
The U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, responsible for the pool’s maintenance and security, have not provided comments on Trump’s allegations. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Park Police officers arrested an individual accused of peeling paint from the pool. However, this arrest may not fully explain other issues, such as patches of loose blue paint and green algae clouds in the pool.
Trump has suggested that chemicals used on the National Mall were also applied to the Reflecting Pool, contributing to its compromised condition. This follows the discovery of numbers etched into the grass on the National Mall—”86 47″—which authorities are investigating as a potential threat against Trump.
The pool, which underwent costly renovations exceeding $14 million in anticipation of the America 250 celebrations, quickly developed an algae bloom, turning the waters back to a green hue. Federal workers have treated the pool to address the algae issue. Despite these efforts, the new blue paint has detached, revealing the rocky base beneath.
The Reflecting Pool’s condition has attracted negative attention after significant investment aimed at beautifying it for upcoming national celebrations.
