Costco has implemented a rationing measure for its Kirkland Signature motor oil, restricting purchases to two boxes per week. This action follows increased gas and diesel prices affecting drivers across the country. Known for offering bulk products at discounted rates, Costco has recently raised its Kirkland Signature full synthetic motor oil price, according to The Auto Wire.
This product consists of a 5-quart, two-bottle case of engine oil for gasoline-powered vehicles. It assists in oil changes, providing lubrication and protection to engine parts. Costco’s website currently lists the product for $57.99, a jump from the previous price range in the mid-$30s as maintained for several years, based on automotive-focused reports.
Costco clearly states that members are limited to a single transaction per membership, with a cap of two units every seven days. The duration of this limitation remains uncertain. Additionally, Costco has set limits on other motor oil products, such as the six-quart case of Mobil 1 priced at $44, restricted to five units per member.
According to The Auto Wire, the likely reasons for Costco’s purchase limits are concerns about maintaining stock levels or anticipating significant future price increases. Newsweek has reached out to Costco for comments but is yet to receive a response.
Motor oil is primarily composed of base oil, refined from crude oil. The surge in oil and gas prices, influenced by the conflict in Iran since late February, might lead oil companies to prioritize refining crude oil into petrol, diesel, or jet fuel rather than motor oil ingredients. This situation causes a reduction in motor oil production, resulting in increased prices throughout the supply chain, which consumers experience as higher shelf prices, even at budget retailers like Costco.
Additionally, higher production costs arise from stricter quality standards and tests introduced in recent years. This is problematic for drivers who handle oil changes independently, as the only retailer capping purchases, Costco, is not alone in facing the motor oil supply squeeze.
Oil prices are on the rise, with a recent surge of over 3 percent as of Monday. This follows a previous week’s increase of approximately 9 percent, coinciding with attacks in the Middle East. Brent crude oil prices, a key global indicator, exceeded $100 a barrel last week and went over $108 on Monday due to conflicts involving Yemen’s Houthi forces in Saudi Arabia.
Major competitors have not yet implemented similar purchase limits. Walmart provides equivalent-brand synthetic oil at around $32 per 5-quart jug, with two-pack prices nearing $64. AutoZone sells two bottles of Mobil 1 Standard Full Synthetic 5W-30 Engine Oil 5 Quart for $40.99. On Amazon, the same product is available at $31.97 per bottle and $63.94 for two bottles. Newsweek has contacted Walmart, AutoZone, and Amazon for comments and is awaiting their replies.
Costco’s Kirkland motor oil is a popular cost-effective alternative to premium brands. Its appeal is possibly the reason for purchase restrictions, aiming to prevent stockpiling and reselling activities.
