Democrats in Austin, Texas are under scrutiny following their swift criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a shooting involving a suspected illegal immigrant. The incident occurred before any investigation was conducted and before the individual was identified as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez. Prominent Democrats, including Rep. Greg Casar, Councilman Mike Siegel, and Mayor Kirk Watson, voiced their opposition to ICE’s actions.
“It is awful that this war has come to our doorstep,” said Casar during a press conference. He expressed concerns over increased ICE presence in Austin, a sentiment echoed by local leaders who called for an end to what they describe as an ICE surge in the community.
Conservatives criticized the Democrats’ swift response, accusing them of selective outrage. Former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs, Tricia McLaughlin, questioned the lack of response from Democrats in other incidents involving illegal immigrants.
Texas Republican State Rep. Andy Hopper stated, “This sort of rhetoric should be disqualifying for any elected official. You cannot faithfully take the oath of office and be for open borders.” Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, criticized the Democrats’ reaction, particularly that of Mayor Watson, for aggravating tensions in Austin.
On social media, Watson faced backlash for his remarks, receiving a significant number of negative comments. Austin attorney Adam Loewy also expressed surprise at Watson’s statement, highlighting the early stage of the investigation.
Despite accusations of an ICE “surge,” Farris argued that federal immigration authorities have been operating in Austin for many years without issue. “They’ve been arresting people that were in the country illegally,” Farris noted, suggesting the current backlash connects to political disputes and the Trump administration.
Following the shooting, protests erupted in Austin. Three people were arrested, police vehicles were damaged, and two officers were injured during confrontations with protestors.
DHS sources confirmed that Garces Perez, identified as an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was shot during a law enforcement operation. His lawyer, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, claimed he was a DoorDash driver when an unmarked truck sideswiped him and an ICE officer shot him.
Wilber entered through CBPOne seeking asylum,” Lincoln-Goldfinch stated, noting an issue with a missed hearing notification sent to the wrong address.
The aftermath of the incident remains contentious, with ongoing debates about immigration enforcement and community safety in Austin.
