September Sprint in MLB Playoff Race
The Major League Baseball season is drawing to a close, with teams scrambling for playoff positions. Both Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox are in the spotlight, competing fiercely for postseason spots. While the Cubs have secured second place in the National League Central Division, falling behind the Milwaukee Brewers once again, the White Sox are locked in a tight competition with the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central crown.
Cubs Update
The Cubs experienced an unfortunate 8-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on September 22, but their record stands at 87-70. With five games left, their magic number for obtaining a wild-card spot is down to one, contingent on a combination of their wins and Arizona Diamondbacks losses. The Cubs are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for the top wild-card position, and they possess the tiebreaker over all three teams. Their last playoff appearance was in 2025, where they entered as the top wild card and progressed through to the division series.
Historically, the Cubs boast 22 playoff appearances out of 150 seasons, including eight division titles, four wild-card berths, 17 pennants, and three championships (1907, 1908, 2016). Player Pete Crow-Armstrong is nearing the milestone of 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a season, currently holding 45 home runs and 39 stolen bases. Only six other players have achieved this feat, showcasing extraordinary athletic prowess.
White Sox Update
With a current record of 81-76, the White Sox celebrated a recent victory against the Kansas City Royals, winning 14-11. Their magic number to clinch a wild-card position sits at three, determined by Sox victories and Houston Astros losses. Trailing the Guardians by one game, the Sox have a strong chance of claiming the division title if both teams finish with the same record due to owning the tiebreaker. In the wild-card standings, the White Sox hold the third spot, ahead of both the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.
In their postseason history stretching over 125 seasons, the White Sox have made 11 appearances, capturing six division titles, one wild-card berth, six pennants, and lifting the championship trophy three times (1906, 1917, 2005). Their most recent playoff journey led them to the division series in 2021.
Upcoming Playoff Format
The upcoming postseason structure includes a wild-card round from September 29 to October 1, featuring a best-of-three format hosted at the higher seed’s venue. The top seeds enjoy byes in this round. Following that, the division series (October 3-10) adopts a best-of-five format, with games distributed at 2-2-1 between the competing teams. The league championship series unfolds in a best-of-seven format, starting October 11 and running through October 20. Finally, the World Series also spans seven games from October 23 to October 31, played in a 2-3-2 format.
